Dr. J. van Aalst studeerde Geneeskunde in Maastricht. Daarnaast behaalde hij in 1999 zijn diploma ‘Uitvoerend Musicus’ aan het Conservatorium Maastricht. Vanaf 2003 werd hij in het MUMC+ opgeleid tot neurochirurg. In 2009 promoveerde hij op het onderwerp ‘Embryological and Surgical aspects of the Tethered Cord’ en is sinds 2010 werkzaam als neurochirurg in het MUMC+.

Specifieke aandachtsgebieden zijn de behandeling van chronische pijn en spasticiteit en de behandeling van spina bifida en het tethered cord.
