Dr. J.T.A. Dings volgde de opleiding geneeskunde aan de Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen.

Vervolgens was hij werkzaam aan de Universiteitskliniek in Giessen, Würzburg en Duisburg (Duitsland). Tijdens de opleiding tot neurochirurg werd het proefschrift over cerebrale zuurstofdrukmeting geschreven.

Sinds eind 1999 is hij werkzaam aan het Academisch ziekenhuis Maastricht en richt zijn aandacht

vooral op de vasculaire neurochirurgie, de epilepsiechirurgie en hersenoperaties waarbij functiebewaking (bv. "wakkere operatie") noodzakelijk is.
