Care

Patients in the Surgery Outpatient Clinic receive the same care as patients in a hospital ward. The one big difference is that almost all patients admitted to the Surgery Outpatient Clinic go home the same day after their procedure. A small number of patients are admitted for one or two nights because their operation requires certain pre-operative and/or post-operative care. Patients who experience complications may also be admitted overnight.
Patients who are admitted for more than one day undergo their procedure in the Surgery Outpatient Clinic but are then transferred to a hospital ward. That is usually Ward A2.

Surgical and outpatient units

The Surgery Outpatient Clinic consists of a surgical unit and an outpatient unit. The surgical unit has seven operating theatres. The outpatient unit consists of two pre-operative areas, one that can accommodate up to five adults and another that can accommodate up to five children. These areas are for patients scheduled to undergo surgery under anaesthesia. After their procedure, these patients spend some time in recovery. They are then transferred to the post-operative area. This area has twelve beds for adult patients. Children are transferred to a separate post-operative area with five beds.
Family members may accompany patients up to the airlock anteroom. This is where patients are placed on the operating table. Once the procedure is finished and patients are in the post-operative area, their families may join them. When a child undergoes a procedure, one of the parents may join the child in recovery as soon as he/she is awake.
