Symposium Neurointervention in the era of endovascular stroke treatment

Symposium and Inauguration Ceremony, 10 January 2020 in Maastricht, The Netherlands

On the 10th of January 2020, a symposium followed by the inauguration of Wim H. van Zwam as Professor in NeuroInterventional Radiology will take place in Maastricht, The Netherlands.

The landscape of Interventional NeuroRadiology or Neurointerventional Radiology has dramatically changed in the last decade, partly because of the results of the Dutch MRCLEAN trial that showed for the first time that endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke is extremely beneficial in selected patients. In a relatively short time this new treatment was incorporated in guidelines worldwide and implemented in most of the developed countries. This required a change of logistics in stroke networks, training of more neurointerventionists and defining quality criteria and benchmarks for this new treatment.

In the meantime already existing neurointerventions of various neurovascular diseases improved by introduction of new techniques and devices. Balloon- and stent-assisted coilings of aneurysms have become standard treatments, while flowdiverters, both intra- and extra saccular, have found their way to most neurointerventional practices.

All these new developments will be addressed by a score of renowned and inspiring speakers who will gather for this unique symposium in the center of Europe: Maastricht.

The symposium will be followed by the inauguration ceremony (in Dutch) of Professor Wim van Zwam.

Finally, for those who want to celebrate this occasion with the newly assigned Professor, a party will be held in a special place: the marl caves near Maastricht.
